Nakoma's Safer Halloween
Saturday, October 31st, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Nakoma loves Halloween and no one wants to see it cancelled, especially in a year that could use a little more of the good kind of scary! With that in mind, the Nakoma League is recommending a modified celebration that follows guidelines from the CDC, the Dane County Department of Public Health and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

We are asking neighbors to prepare bags of candy to leave outside for children. Details below and in the upcoming issue of Under the Oaks.

Modified Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-Treating will happen from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, ensuring visibility so parents can check that safe practices are in place at participating homes. Children should not approach homes and ring doorbells or knock. Instead, neighbors should place individually wrapped goodie bags in locations that make it easy for trick-or-treaters to grab while still maintaining social distance -- such as the end of the driveway or edge of the yard. Compared to at-home based activities, the CDC categorizes this as a "moderate risk", so ultimately families should choose to do whatever they are the most comfortable with. (Please note that plans may shift as the covid situation changes. Stay up to date at and at the Nakoma Neighbors Facebook group.)

Safe Practices for Modified Trick-or-Treating

-Trick-or-Treat only with members of your immediate family and stay in your neighborhood.

-Don’t approach homes to ring doorbells or knock. Don't take candy left unattended in bowls.

-Bring hand sanitizer and use often!

-Wear a mask but never substitute a costume mask for a cloth mask or wear a costume mask over a cloth mask because it can restrict breathing.

-Walk with the flow of traffic and do not come within six feet of other groups.

-Let candy sit for a day or two before eating.

Safe Practices for Welcoming Trick-or-Treaters

-Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before preparing candy bags.

-Put candy in individual bags in an area that is less likely to create a bottleneck in tighter spaces.

-Do not hand out candy or place it in an unattended bowl for kids to rummage through.

-Consider placing hand sanitizer by your treats.

-Feel free to remain outside to welcome trick-or-treaters but maintain social distance and wear a non-costume mask.

Halloween Spirit Decorating Contest!

Time to dust off those enormous spiders, foam tombstones and inflatable ghosts -- our Halloween spirit is as strong as ever and we’re putting it on display!  All decorated homes will be automatically entered and three winners will get serious bragging rights and a $100 gift certificate to Monroe Street businesses.
